FAIRMONT -

A lot of traveling is involved with the Fourth of July holiday, and law enforcement is urging those on the road to be extra cautious.

Last Fourth of July, it is estimated that Americans cracked open about 68 million cases of beer.

Lieutenant John Murphy from the Fairmont Police department said to make sure you have a designated driver when drinking, to avoid risking your own life  or others.

"There is more of a traffic enforcement push during the holidays so it's more apt that a motorist who commits some type of infraction would encounter law enforcement. Just another reason to double down on being safe and having that designated driver," said Lieutenant John Murphy.

the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety said that the Fourth of July is the worst day of the year for fatal car crashes.
