First Viking Death Grip Challenge Held at Viking Performance

MORGANTOWN -

The first ever Viking Death Grip Challenge was held at Viking Performance Training in Morgantown on Saturday.

Competitors took part in grip sport, where they only focus on the strength of their hands.

This is a sub category in the world of strength sports like powerlifting, strong man, and weight lifting.

A world record attempt was made at the challenge, where Val Walker attempted a 293 pound double overhand ax deadlift. The current record is 288, and she was attempting to break that.

"The best way to train for this is just to use your hands. When you're in the gym, avoid those straps that help you to hold onto the bar. Lift as many heavy things as possible with your hands. And if you do manual labor, that's even better," said Paul Mouser, organizer.

Awards were given away and all inaugural records for grip sport in West Virginia were set.
