North Elementary Students Plant First Seeds in New High Tunnel

MORGANTOWN -

Students at North Elementary School are learning about math and science through a new project.

Wednesday, fourth grade students planted 180 lettuce seedlings in the school’s high tunnel. In about a month, those seedlings will mature, and the school will use the lettuce in its cafeteria.

Kevin Kieffer, a fourth grade teacher, said the benefit to the students extends beyond the healthy produce. He said students are learning about fractions, agriculture and the value of research through this project.

“Automatically, they’re excited to get out here and learn about this stuff because it’s a hands-on project, but while they’re doing it, they’ve done all of the research for these plants, so they’re learning about agriculture along the way," said Kieffer.

The project is part of a partnership between North Elementary and WVU.
