WVU Students Commemorate Anniversary of Challenger Disaster

Posted: Updated:

On January 28, students at WVU commemorated the Challenger disaster. Members of the McNair Scholars Program read the names of the astronauts who died that day.

The program is named after Dr. Ronald E. McNair, a first generation college student who died in the accident. In his memory, the McNair Scholars Program strives to give students a better opportunity to achieve in their lives.

“We want to level the playing field for the disadvantaged student population so they can also become role models for others one day, or work in research fields or at universities, being professors," said Betty Mei, McNair Scholars program director.

Since 1999, this federally funded program has helped dozens of students earn a graduate degree or PhD.
