An expert at WVU said new research from the school could continue to fuel the growing oil and gas industry.
The new study outlines the accessibility of Utica shale.
The Utica shale play lies underneath Marcellus shale, which is the largest oil and gas play in the United States.
Researchers explained what they discovered about Utica shale at a conference in Pennsylvania Tuesday, July 14.
Director of WVU Energy Institute Brian Anderson explained how important this study is to the future of the industry.
“We’ve always known that their was a lot of gas in the Utica shale, but this really gives some bounds on how much could be produced, and it is on par and exceeds the Marcellus, so we know it’s a huge resource that’s out there,” said Anderson.
The report comes from WVU’s National Research Center for Coal and Energy.
