Parents as Teachers Program Expanding in Randolph County

ELKINS -

A program to serve pregnant women and children under five is expanding.

The Parents as Teachers program allows home visitors to help families ensure their children's readiness for school when they turn five.

50 families are served in Tucker County and the program is starting to grow in Randolph County. The Family Resource Network in Elkins has five parent educators, two full time and three part time educators.

Educators said they encourage parents to be the children's first teacher.

"Just a because a piece of paper says 'oh your baby should be rolling over at six months', doesn't mean they're going to roll over at six months. They need help in developing that, and sometimes it's just talking with them, having a toy you move around. But they understand that kindergarten is not when they first start learning. Parents are the child's first and most important teacher," said Questie Reams. parent educator
