Common Core Town Hall forum coming to Bridgeport, WV August 24
More groups and individuals are beginning to make their voices heard amid the growing backlash that surrounds Common Core, also known as Next Generation Standards, or NextGen, as it is called in the Mountain State.
In order to spread the word, a Town Hall forum is set for 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 24 in Bridgeport. According to a news release, the forum is organized by concerned citizens, school board members, legislators, legislative candidates, WV Against Common Core, the Hampshire Tea Party and Freedom Works.
Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin was quoted in The Journal of Martinsburg as not being aware of any backlash regarding Common Core, so the WV Against Common Core organization sent Tomblin a personal letter inviting him to attend the Bridgeport Common Core Town Hall forum.
Scheduled to speak and answer questions at the event is Sandra Stotsky, former member of the Common Core Validation Committee and one of five who refused to sign off on the standards as being internationally benchmarked, rigorous or research-based.
Some of Stotsky's accomplishments include serving as senior associate commissioner at the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education from 1999-2003. In that position, Stotsky was in charge of developing or revising all of the state's K-12 standards, teacher licensure tests and teacher and administrator licensure regulations. Other experiences include serving on the Massachusetts Board of Elementary and Secondary Education, the National Mathematics Advisory Panel and editor of the research journal Research in the Teaching of English and published by the National Council of Teachers of English. Stotsky has also published in professional journals and written several books.
The public is invited to attend. To learn more about the event or to RSVP, contact WV Against Common Core at firstname.lastname@example.org or visit WV Against Common Core's Facebook page.
