The 45th Comic-Con International Convention in San Diego got a dose of Marshall University education, thanks to the school’s psychology department.

Two faculty members and two doctoral students presented a session at the convention, which is meant to create awareness of and appreciation for comics and related popular art forms.

The professors, April Fugett and Keith Beard, along with students Elijah Wise and Britani Black, presented “From Spider-Man to Darth Vader — How your personality influences our favorite characters,” which drew an attencence of nearly 200 people.

Their research surveyed more than 400 people from across the country about the characters they liked and with which they identified as well as submitting a personality test. The researchers then looked to possible relationships between personality characteristics in the test as well as the characters participants identified with and liked.

The results showed people who like pop culture characters often are imaginative, like variety and have many interests. Those people also tend to be energetic, talkative, optimistic and friendly, according to the study.

“Younger individuals tended to like characters from more recent movies such as characters from Batman, The Avengers and X-Men, and Hunger Games, while those older individuals tended to like more classic characters like those in Star Wars and Star Trek,” Fugett said.
