Ohio County Schools Appoint First-Ever Vice President

Posted: Updated:
WHEELING - A new position was created at the Ohio Count School board meeting Tuesday after a motion was passed on Monday night.

For the first time in school board history, Ohio County has selected a vice president to serve on the board. President of the board, Shane Mallett, called the special conference to announce Gary Kestner the new vice president.

Kestner has been employed with Ohio County Schools for the past 27 years. He started out as a mechanic working the bus garage, then as a driver for 19 years, and director of transportation, and was elected to the board of education two years ago. Kestner said the school board will work to provide their students the best opportunities to achieve and get more public participation during their meetings. "I'm overwhelmed that the president had confidence in me to select me as his vice president, I'm looking forward to working with him and the rest of the board and accomplish some new goals for this year," he said.

Mallett said that most boards of education throughout the State of West Virginia already have vice presidents, and due to the number of employees and students within the Ohio County School District, a vice president is needed to ensure efficiency is maintained.

Mallett added he and Kestner share similar ideas when it comes to trying to save the tax payers in the district money, by rolling back some of the levy dollars.
