Kevin McCoy took video of the Monongahela River on Saturday afternoon and posted it on Facebook. The river appeared to have some sort of liquid substance floating on the surface.
He and several other people noticed it underneath the High Level Bridge in Fairmont, along with military boats.
The Department of Environmental Protection Public Information Office said they are aware of the situation and are looking into it.
They also said, "At this time, no industry, business, etc. has reported a spill to us." The DEP said Monday that the substance appears to be petroleum based, which will float on top of the water. The DEP said Fairmont's drinking water intake is upstream from where the substance was spotted, although Morgantown's water intake is about 15 to 20 miles downstream. The DEP said due to the petroleum consistency, it's likely that it has already dissipated.
The DEP said it has a few leads and it continues to investigate.
