The oath of office was administered for a second time Thursday, July 10, to Miki Thompson, the new circuit judge for Mingo County.

Thompson was originally sworn in June 11 as judge of the Thirtieth Judicial Circuit in a private ceremony so she could start work that day. This week, a public ceremony was held at the Mingo County courthouse to celebrate her appointment.

The oath was administered by Judge John Cummings who, with Senior Status Justice Thomas McHugh, had handled the Mingo County circuit court docket since Thompson’s predecessor, former judge Michael Thornsbury, was indicted by a federal grand jury. Thornsbury, who subsequently resigned and pleaded guilty to conspiring to deprive an individual of his constitutional rights, has been sentenced to 50 months in prison, which he’s appealing. His pension, amounting to nearly $100,000 a year, also has been forfeited.

Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin appointed Thompson to the bench after she won the primary election in May. She had been a family court judge in the Eighth Family Court Circuit (Mingo County) since 2009.

A graduate of the University of Kentucky, she began her career in Mingo County as an assistant prosecuting attorney in 1992. She had her own law practice until 2008.
