Phone Scam Targets Monongalia County

Posted: Updated:

The Monongalia County Sheriff's Department is warning residents of a scam hitting the area recently.

Someone identifying themselves as either a "Lt. Ron Davis" or "Captain Roundtree" is calling residents and telling them they've missed jury duty and must pay a fine.

He then tells the resident to come to the parking lot of the Sheriff's Office in Morgantown, but not go inside. Instead, the scammer tells them to call either (304) 244-6618 or (304) 224-6577 and give them a pre-paid debit card number with the amount they owe for an arrest warrant.

According to a news release, one person followed the instructions and lost $500 to the scammer.

Monongalia County officials want to remind residents that officers of the law will never call them soliciting money for arrest warrants or missed jury duty.

If you receive a call like this, please call your local law enforcement. In Monongalia County, residents can report and scam incidents to the Sheriff's Department at (304) 291-7290.
