‘Upward Bound’ a federally-funded program that helps prepare high school students for college.
A few weeks out of the Summer students from almost every county in the state participate in the 'Upward Bound' program at Salem International University. The program allows students to experience life in the dorms and even attend classes.
Thursday evening 45 students were able to learn about the history of Salem, while planting shrubs, painting, building brick sidewalks at Fort New Salem.
“Being out here for community service is very important, I feel it supports the community and brings it closer together and it's great for the students, they have to learn a sense of community,” said Tanner Wuchner, Buckhannon-Upshur H.S. Student.
“For me it means going to college honestly, because without them I wouldn’t be able to go, they’re just awesome, it’s an awesome group of people and I am really thankful to have them,” said Servando Arredondo, Buckhannon-Upshur H.S. Student.
The students said being a part of the group especially being part of 'Upward Bound' has changed their lives and given them a chance to attend college.
