Hundreds of people gathered in the rural Gilmer County community of Rosedale Sunday afternoon to observe Memorial Day in a big way. After enjoying a parade through the community, crowds gathered in the Rosedale Alliance Park for a service and dedication of a new memorial to our country's veterans. Area teen Lucas Tanner led the effort to install the piece, and said he's glad to see his hard work come together.
"It's beautiful to see the creation as a whole, and also that's going to benefit others. This is to honor the veterans and to make them feel that we appreciate them," said Tanner.
Area honor guards and members of the American Legion came out to support Tanner and his efforts at the ceremony on Sunday. The Legion's Roy Turner said he's gone to many similar observances over past years, but he was still surprised at the size of the crowd that gathered in Rosedale.
"This is the most people they've seen in Rosedale in a long time, so it's a great day for them. Back up in Ohio and bigger cities or something, you can expect it, but this is a really great turnout for a small community like this," said Turner.
