When my Nonna, Leona Masciantonio, 85, heard that there was another Nonna in Morgantown giving her a run for her money, she had to try it for herself.
Food and family go hand in hand, especially if you're Italian, and that couldn't be more true for Nonna's Bakery and Deli.
'Nonna' means "grandmother" in Italian. When Sandy LeDonne was coming up with a name for her authentic Italian bakery she thought the word fit perfectly.
Nonna's feels homey, comfortable, and nostalgic.
"All of our products are baked from scratch, by hand, no preservatives," said LeDonne. "It was just one of those things, we started out that way, and that's the way it continued. We have six types of biscotti, eleven types of tea cookies, eclairs, always we sell out of those early during the day, cupcakes, muffins, cream horns, lady fingers, and then of course chocolate chip cookies, sugar cookies, and no bakes."
That's a long list of sweets to indulge in. But that isn't all Nonna's has to offer. Customers can get homemade bread, salads, and sandwiches.
All of the menu items are named after LeDonne's family members and people that have stopped in the store.
Big Al is one of the most popular items on the menu, it's Nonna's version of a cheese steak hoagie.
"I got the Rocco, it's a pizza sub," said Jimmy Smith, a first time customer. "It's really good."
My Nonna got the Vinnie and Rocco Panini. She loved the Italian twist the deli puts on the sandwich.
"I like the capicola," Masciantonio said.
I asked her if it tastes like something she would make. She said, "Yes, I would say so."
Nonna's Bakery and Deli also ships their homemade pepperoni rolls and sauce to places all over the country.
"They're hand rolled and we do have two types of meat in them," said LeDonne. "One is pepperoni, and the other is the second meat. It's a from scratch dough that I created."
You can check out all of the baked goods, paninis, and more at Nonna's located at 511 Burroughs Street in Morgantown.
The Bakery and Deli is open Monday through Friday 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.
