For the fourth year in a row, the city of Shinnston has been named a “Playful City USA.”
Playful City USA provides grants to towns and cities that make 'play' a priority in the community.
Out of 212 cities, Shinnston is only one of two in West Virginia.
Previously the city used the grant to purchase the Innovation Playground, which is used by school groups, churches, and other groups.
“It provides grant funding for us, and different grant opportunities and programs we normally would never qualify for. The best example is the Imagination Playgrounds we just received this winter, that's $12,000 worth of portable playground equipment that the city got for free essentially. We do have some work going on at additional play spaces this year. We have a group of volunteers constructing a bike track at Ferguson Park and we may be able to use some of the grant money to help with that project,” explained Reuben Purdue, Community Development Director for the city of Shinnston.
The Imagination Playground was only available to multiple year recipients.
