Cyclists Ride in 36th Annual Appalachian Spring Spectacular

Posted: Updated:
MORGANTOWN - A 25 mile car ride may seem like nothing, but when you travel 25 miles on a bike it is going to take a little more time and energy.

25 miles was the shortest trail that you could choose from on the Spring Spectacular list provided by Country Roads Cyclists on Sunday for the annual Appalachian Spring Spectacular.

"It is our biggest ride all year, it is our premiere event," said Mary Small, the Secretary Treasurer of the Country Roads Cyclists. We offer it every May and we've been doing it for 37 years."

The Spring Spectacular had close to 100 bikers riding in several different experience levels. There was a 25 mile rail trail course, and a 25, 45 and 60 mile road rides that cyclist could choose from.

Beginners usually stick with the 25 mile rail trail ride and cyclists can choose to bike as far as they want.

This was the first year Small rode in the Spring Spectacular.

"I just joined the club last year, I was new to cycling, and now I'm on the board," said Small. "I was one of the 20 organizers of this event. We had a big committee and everyone worked hard to make sure all of the participants had a great time."

Country Roads Cyclists focus on the joy of biking in West Virginia. The group also encourages new riders and beginners to join the club. A father and his kids even joined in the ride.

"The rail trails are very easy to ride, they're great for new cyclists or those who want to socialize while they're biking," Small said. "We also offered three road rides for those who are little more serious or in a little bit better shape."

Country Roads Cyclists has a number of rides and races coming up over the next few months. Including a repeat of the Appalachian Spring Spectacular trails on May 11.
