In the wake of an investigation into an affair Randolph County Circuit Judge Jaymie Godwin Wilfong had with the former director of the local community corrections program, West Virginia State Supreme Court Justice Robin Davis has issued an order disqualifying Wilfong from hearing cases.
Wilfong asked not to be disqualified, but Davis made the decision to "avoid even an appearance of impropriety," according to the order.
Earlier this week, the West Virginia Judicial Investigation Commission charged Wilfong with violating the code of judicial conduct in connection with the affair with William Travis Carter.
Justice Davis has temporarily appointed Judge Thomas Keadle and Judge Thomas Steptoe to handle the cases of the Randolph County Circuit Court. The two Senior Status judges will serve in Randolph County until Davis decides they are no longer needed. Once there assignment is finished, they will still handle cases that they dealt with during the temporary assignment.
Judge Keadle retired last year after serving as the 26th Circuit Judge for 28 years. The 26th Circuit covers Lewis and Upshur counties.
Judge Steptoe served as Jefferson County's circuit judge before retiring in 2009.
