Marion County Sheriff's Department said the 12-year-old boy rescued Sunday morning from Tygart River attempted to steal a boat before the rescue.
Deputy Nicholas Minnick said the boy snuck out of his house around 5:30 a.m. and headed to the river.
Deputy Minnick said the boy either jumped into the water to get to the boat or fell off the boat at the pier behind Wood's Boat House.
Deputy Minnick said the boy then could not get out of the water and cried for help.
According to 911 officials, witnesses said they heard the boy cries for help and called 911.
Sheriff's deputies, divers from the Winfield Fire Department and the Marion County Rescue Squad were dispatched to the scene.
The boy was taken to Ruby Memorial Hospital where Deputy Minnick said he was treated for hypothermia.
The boy's name has not been released.
The sheriff's office is still investigating the incident.

Authorities from Marion County rescued a 12-year-old boy from the Tygart River on Sunday morning.

Witnesses heard the boy's cries for help from the water, according to 911 officials, so sheriff's deputies, divers from the Winfield Fire Department, and the Marion County Rescue Squad were dispatched to the scene.
The boy was taken to Ruby Memorial Hospital. No word on his name or condition.
The Division of Natural Resources was also at the scene of the rescue.
The sheriff's department is investigating.
