The city of Fairmont has officially taken its final step in its process of joining the Home Rule pilot program.
On Tuesday night, council members voted unanimously to approve an ordinance authorizing the city to submit a written plan to the state.
Home Rule would allow Fairmont to make decisions more efficiently without consulting the state, which Mayor Ron Straight said, would help the city tremendously.
"[It will help us tear down] dilapidated buildings, we don't have to go through a lengthy process for some of the ones that are falling down. It'll give us more money, so to speak, so we can tear some of these buildings down, said Straight. "[It'll also help with] B&O tax, things of that nature."
The process has been a lengthy one for city officials, as the process has taken more than two years, according to city manager Jay Rogers.
The city plans to submit the application to Charleston next month.
