Circuit Judge Alan Moats officially swore in a new sheriff for Barbour County on Friday.
During the special ceremony, Phil Ferguson was named sheriff.
Ferguson served as a interim sheriff after former sheriff John Hawkins resigned last month after pleading guilty to insurance fraud.
Ferguson is also a candidate for sheriff this November.
Ferguson said the county will need time to heal from all that has happened.
He said it will take time to work things out.
"The people here in the county are good people. The deputies that I have are good people. The court system we have here is a good court system, and I just want to build trust back into the people of Barbour County that the sheriff's department is a good department, said Ferguson.
Judge Moats also swore in sheriff's deputies and tax office deputies within the department.
Ferguson has been in the sheriff's department for 22 years.
