Friday afternoon, the Barbour County Commission named Lieutenant Phil Ferguson interim Sheriff.
Ferguson replaces former Sheriff John Hawkins, who resigned Thursday after pleading guilty to insurance fraud in federal court. Federal investigators said Hawkins staged an accident with a vehicle last year, and falsified an insurance claim for repairs.
Ferguson said he was already preparing himself to take on the role of sheriff. "I was already planning on running when Sheriff Hawkins term was up. So this is not a problem for me to take his position," said Ferguson.
The commission has 30 days to appoint a permanent successor to Hawkins.
