Gilmer County Senior Center Hosts Valentine's Day Dance
On Friday, the Gilmer County Senior Center proved it's never too late to get your boogy on. The center hosted it's fifth annual Valentine's Day Dinner and Dance. The people came in masses to get the house rocking.
Considering the event almost didn't happen due to uncertain weather, the center's executive director Sallie Mathess was pleased with the turn-out.
"With the weather tonight, we almost thought we'd cancel it," Mathess said. "With everybody that came out, I think there's like, there's 70-something people here, which is really good, so we're really glad for that."
Before the dance started, guests were treated to a dinner prepared by the staff at the center. Mathess said that although planning had been ongoing for months, the finishing touches weren't put on until Friday evening
"We prepared it today. Nothing is pre-made or anything," Mathess said. "Except maybe for the cakes, which I made last night."
After that, the real fun began. People of all ages flooded the floor. Although the senior center planned the event, everybody was welcome. Ages of the dancers ranged from just three months to 96 years.
Two of those dancers, Charles and Wilda Jenkins, are part of a senior line-dancing group. The two, who will celebrate their 61st wedding anniversary in April, said they were ready to get back on the dance floor.
"We'd never danced, we'd never done anything except raise the family," Wilda said. "And then, all of the sudden, the kids are gone, the grand children are growing, and we get on our dancing shoes."
