The Chicago Bulls had Phil Jackson. The Green Bay Packers had Vince Lombardi. The Bridgeport High School Quiz Bowl team has Barb Judy.
Since the beginning of Judy's tenure as coach in 1993, the team has won eight state championships, five of which have been in AAA and three in AA. But Judy said Monday that she wasn't ready to stop there.
"I'd be lying if I didn't say I'm expecting another one," said Judy, who also recently led the school's Science Bowl team to a state tournament appearance. "They're smart kids. They're hard working kids, and I look for us to take first in AA this year."
Judy has worked in education since 1973. When she retired from counseling in 2006, she decided to keep coaching the Quiz Bowl, Science Bowl and Pre-Engineering Teams before adding the History Bowl as well a few years ago.
The students on the Quiz Bowl team said that the team's previous successes give them confidence and a little extra swagger heading into each season, especially after winning the title again last year.
"Everyone knows that we're a good team because of last year and prior years when we did well," said Raymond Rector, a senior on the team.
Judy said that she is not the reason that the teams have been successful. Rather, she said that it is the hard work of the students and dedication to getting better.
"I have a little study guide at home that I kind of review with," said Troy Pallay, a junior on the Quiz Bowl team and the captain of the Science Bowl team.
Of the four teams, Judy said that she prefers Quiz Bowl because of its wide range of topics.
"A lot of the things in Quiz Bowl are really interesting things about art and music and literature," said Ahmed Haque, a senior on the team. "And there's the occasional question about contemporary music that will be about the Beatles or Miley Cyrus, even."
Even with the legacy that she has built, Judy said that next year will be her last as coach. She said that even though she will miss her teams, the time is right.
"I've got grandchildren now that I'd like to see more often than I currently do. Doing all four teams does take a majority of the school year."
The Quiz Bowl team will look to defend its throne and continue its dynastic run on March 29 in the state tournament at Ohio Valley University.
