West Virginia State has been selected by the Mountain East Conference coaches to win the league's inaugural softball championship.
The Yellow Jackets collected 140 points and 10 of a possible12 first-place votes. WVSU posted a record of 42-14 last year and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. West Virginia State, which received votes in the initial National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) poll, will be powered by junior outfielder Sabrina Schouten who batted .451 last year, senior Mattie Best who hit .409 and sophomore pitcher Anna Eggleston who went 7-2 last year with an ERA of 2.22.
Fairmont State, which posted a record of 37-12 in 2013, was picked to finish second with 126 points and received the remaining two first -place votes. West Virginia Wesleyan was narrowly behind the Falcons in third with 124 points, followed by Charleston in fourth with 113 points.
Glenville State was picked to finish fifth (84 points), followed by Shepherd (74), UVa-Wise (67) and Notre Dame College (54). Urbana was tabbed to finish ninth with 47 points, and Wheeling Jesuit (43), Concord (39) and West Liberty (25) rounded out the poll.
