A woman has pleaded guilty to the February 2011 death of her 14-month-old boy.
Julia Mick, 30, was indicted on one count of child neglect resulting in death in July 2013. She pleaded guilty to the charge before Judge John Henning in Lewis County Circuit Court Wednesday. Judge Henning accepted the plea and will sentence Mick at a later date.
Christopher Sheppard, 25, of Hepzibah, was also indicted in July 2013 on one count of death of a child by parent, guardian, or custodian or by other person by child abuse, according to court filings. Sheppard was previously charged but Special Prosecutor Michael Parker dismissed that charge in June. Sheppard will go to trial on March 24, beginning with jury selection. Sheppard is being held on $100,000 cash only bail in Central Regional Jail.
Christopher Sheppard was babysitting Mick's son and left him unattended in a sink. The child fell out of the sink onto his head and later died, according to a criminal complaint. An autopsy revealed several blunt force traumas to the child's brain, among other injuries.
