Health Fair Sponsored By 'Shinnston Thrives' Grant Held in Shinnston

The city of Shinnston recently received a grant to promote healthy lifestyles in the community. The first event sponsored by the grant is a health fair.

Jill Fratto with the Edventure Group wrote the grant that was approved by the West Virginia Development Office's Growing Healthy Communities Program.

Fratto said that Shinnston already has so many programs to promote community development and that the Shinnston Thrives grant fits right in.

"We got the Playful City award and we have so many great parks and equipment for kids and to me this project is just a way to build on all of that and to expand that to more of a culture of wellness," said Fratto.

The grant was for more than $17,000. That money will be used to sponsor various events in the community including the health fair held on Thursday.

"There will be five of these events in total. There will also be a large community based health fair held in the Lincoln High School parking lot later in the spring. We're also going to establish a community garden. Our vision is to make the produce available through the Lord's Pantry so they have more fresh items available when they do their pickups every week," said Fratto.

The health fair on Thursday featured healthy food, giveaways, and free bone density screenings.

Pamela Pumphrey came by the fair and said she thinks the grant will be good for the community.

"I really am enthusiastic about the health of everyone in the community including mine. I also wanted to be here to represent my church, the First Baptist Church. All the churches here want our community to get healthier," explained Pumphrey, a Shinnston resident.

The next health fair will be held on February 27.

You can find updates on events at the city of Shinnston's Facebook page.

There will be a website for the Shinnston Thrives project in the near future.
