Brandy Smallwood to be sentenced in Raleigh County courtroom on Tuesday.
A Raleigh County woman who pleaded guilty charges of child neglect that resulted in the death of one of her children was sentenced in court on Tuesday, Jan. 21.
Brandy Smallwood of Fairdale went before Judge Hutchison. She pleaded guilty in October 2013 to two counts of child neglect that resulted in the death of one of her children and the brutal beating of the other.
Smallwood sobbed in court as she begged for forgiveness and listened once again to the series of events last year that led to the death of her two-year-old son.
But her true feelings from the past were revealed when Prosecuting Attorney Kristen Keller read aloud phone conversations between her and the children's biological father in prison.
"Smallwood said I can't stand these kids anymore... I want to choke them," said Keller.
Smallwood left her twin sons in the care of her boyfriend James Green in February of last year.
Keller said the two were heavily using narcotics that day and Green beat the two children in a drug-fueled rage.
"He was also telling her to beat the toddlers... she was saying she was beating the toddlers and all she was doing was horrifically swearing and screaming at these babies and complaining and saying that she wanted to get rid of them basically," said Keller.
Green received a life sentence after pleading guilty to the murder.
Smallwood was sentenced to 1 to 10 years for child neglect resulting in death and 1 to 3 years for child neglect resulting in serious injury.
She is also never allowed to live with someone under the age of 18 again or have any contact with her two living children for the rest of her life.
