Food Fresh IGA in Bridgeport is slated to close its doors at the end of the month, and on Monday, the Bridgeport Development Authority discussed the concerns of residents over a lack of a grocery store within city limits.
Randy Spellman, the director of community development, said the owner of Food Fresh IGA has not announced who will take over the space but that new tenant will not be a supermarket.
Spellman has reached out to other chains to inform them of the city's need.
"What we have found out is that if one of those large chains decided tomorrow that they wanted to locate in Bridgeport, it's a two-to-three year process. The next grocery store that we're going to see in the city is the Shop 'n Save, slating to open sometime in 2015," said Spellman.
Spellman said construction of that Shop 'n Save will begin this fall and will take approximately nine months.
