James Green gets life with mercy, plus 2-10 years in prison for the beating of twin toddlers, one of whom died.
Swift justice came in Raleigh County to the first of two people involved with the murder of a two-year-old boy and the beating of his twin brother.
James Green was in court on Tuesday, Jan. 14 to be sentenced on charges of First Degree Murder and Child Abuse Causing Serious Bodily Injury. The charges stem from the beating of a pair of twin boys in Fairdale back in February. The toddlers were the children of Green's new wife, Brandy Smallwood.
The first child, Graydon, was killed in the beating. Raleigh County Prosecuting Attorney, Kristen Keller said that the other boy, Ezekiel, was watching when Graydon was killed. Circuit Judge John Hutchison sentenced Green to life in prison with mercy on the First Degree Murder Charge. Green will serve another sentence of 2 to 10 years in prison on the Child Abuse charge. The sentences will serve consecutively, that mean one after the other. Keller said that it was important that the sentences be served that way.
"We are grateful that the court did, in fact, give Ezekiel his own justice," said Keller. "The though of that twin witnessing the murder of his brother is just incomprehensible."
The mother of the children, Brandy Smallwood, also pleaded guilty to charges in this case. She is set to be sentence later in January.
