The West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection is investigating a report of an oil spill on Prunty Road in Smithville, Ritchie County.
The spill is reported to have happened on Jan. 5 at a TAPCO Energy well site due to a faulty valve on a tank, said Thomas Aluise, DEP spokesman. Approximately 10 to 15 gallons of oil entered the receiving stream, Hughes River, and 3/4 of a barrel was spilled into the ditch line.
A DEP inspector has been at the scene of the spill, said Aluise. Cleanup of the spill has occurred and an absorbent boom was placed in the river.
No citations have been issued at this time.
