New Year's Eve is a time to welcome the new year with friends and family. The holiday sometimes includes alcohol, which often leads people to drink and drive. But you might want to rethink before you see that ignition. Otherwise you might be seeing the blue lights flashing behind you.
"Absolutely don't drink and drive. Period," said Chief Ed Preston, of the Morgantown Police Department. "Do not drink and drive, that's your warning. If you're out drinking and driving tonight you have been warned, you will be arrested. The biggest thing is to take the precautions before hand. Get a designated driver, get a cab, or ride a bus, or have a friend that you can call."
That friend to call could be Eric Watkins of DubV Safe Ride. Watkins created the business to hopefully put an end to DUI's in the area. The procedure is simple, a driver takes a scooter to your location, puts it in the backseat of your car, and gets you and your ride home safely.
"You can either call us and use a designated driver to drive you and your car home safely or you can go to jail, die, or kill someone else. It's that simple," said Watkins. "Tonight, there's no excuse for drinking and driving."
The popularity of DubV Safe Ride is growing every day. Watkins had almost 20 reservations for pick ups Tuesday evening.
"DubV Safe Ride, we're cheaper than a DUI," said Watkins. "You can call me up, you can ride with us, or you can ride with the police. It's your choice."
Chief Preston said that the Morgantown Police Department will have all available resources and personnel out working for New Years Eve. Preston also agrees with Watkins, besides possibly injuring yourself and someone else, cost is a big part of getting a DUI.
"First offense DUI can cost you thousands of dollars just on the first offense," said Chief Preston. "You'll have the arrest, you'll have the bail, you'll have the court fines, you'll have maybe the probation fines and fees. But even more importantly are the costs people don't pay attention to is the increased insurance."
