College Spotlight: Pat McGinnis Building FSU Women's Soccer From Ground Up
Starting from scratch can be a tough thing to do. A brand new office is followed by a brand new field. For Pat McGinnis, it's a challenge he wanted to confront head on.
"Opportunity; bigger school, Fairmont State Women's Soccer Head Coach Pat McGinnis said. "Also, just the mission. The mission and the statement that both Tim and Clark, the Assistant Athletic Director, had talked about. They wanted to balloon things up. The fact that they put a lot of emphasis, you know, they wanted us to win."
In terms of winning, Fairmont State picked the right guy. McGinnis won 58 games in six years while coaching at Alderson Broaddus. He also led the Lady Battlers to the WVIAC Tournament Championship in 2011, followed by the conference regular season crown in 2012. He says he will be forever grateful for the chance to be ABU's first women's soccer coach.
"Unbelievable," he said. "The opportunity to build something from the ground up and then to be that successful. I look back and kind of laugh. To average 11 wins per season over the last five years is something I never would have thought when I made the trip up to Philippi. So it was a fantastic opportunity for me."
But now he's prepared to embrace a new opportunity. Fairmont State University has never featured a women's soccer program, and the way McGinnis wound up in Fairmont may surprise you.
"Through some third-party people, just blended some advice on budgetary numbers and things like that on starting a program. Then kind of one thing led to another. Conversation sparked up and next thing you know, here I am," he said.
And now he's in the Friendly City, assembling a new team in a new environment.
"Like anything you're going to need the right luck and you're going to have to land some pretty good recruits. But I'm absolutely confident with the structure and the environment here. The support that the athletic staff and the campus provides, that without a doubt we can make some noise both in the MEC and in the Atlantic Region," McGinnis added.
