Local Taxidermy Business Booms after Hunting Season

Posted: Updated:

Deer season in West Virginia has many benefits not only for the hunters, but also for local businesses like DeMarco's Taxidermy in Shinnston.

"Deer season is our bread and butter. I probably take in more at this time of the year more than anything with deer and game heads," explained Tootie DeMarco, owner of DeMarco's Taxidermy.

DeMarco said every year varies, but he sees a large number of white tailed deer coming into his shop around this time.

"Depending on the year I'd say somewhere between 50 and 100. They'll trickle in from here on out. A lot of times people get their tax money back and then they'll bring one out of the freezer," DeMarco said.

DeMarco said most of his business comes from Harrison County but he gets deer in from other states as well.

"A large amount from Harrison County but neighboring counties as well, and I've got a few out-of-staters that come down here too. A lot of the local hunters I've noticed are going out of state to hunt," said DeMarco.

On Tuesday, DeMarco was working on bucks from Ohio and Iowa.

Other than deer DeMarco will mount bear, turkey, fish, and more but said white tailed deer are his specialty.

With the holidays coming up DeMarco said taxidermy can make a good Christmas present.

"A girl came in here last year and paid her husband's deer off and I wrote her a receipt and wrote it in red and green so she could put it under the tree and hand it to him so when the deer was done all he had to do was pick it up," DeMarco explained.

You can find DeMarco's Taxidermy on Owings Road in Shinnston, or call them at 304-592-1154.
