On Monday, local Civil Air Patrol Cadets received the Billy Mitchell award.
Each cadet has to achieve several milestones to be eligible for the award. The award is only given to 15% of all Civil Air Patrol Cadets nationally.
A lot of hard work is involved to receive the award. Senior members of the West Virginia Wing, community leaders, military personnel and family members were all in attendance at the ceremony that took place at the Benedum Civic Center.
"I'm excited as can be. It's taken me a long time; its taken me actually about half a year or more to achieve this. I've passed Physical Training; I've passed aerospace; it was the leadership that was hard. Actually it's good that I waited or got to study it more because now I understand how to lead a better way and how to lead my cadets," said Cadet Second Lieutenant Jonah Lopez.
Cadets said they have multiple Civil Air Patrol programs. They said they have three main courses in the program that are: aerospace, leadership, and emergency services that involve search and rescue.
If anyone is interested in joining the Civil Air Patrol you can stop by your local airport or stop by the Harrison County Civil Air Patrol headquarters, located next to the North Central Airport in Bridgeport.
