The Mountaineer Mall has been quiet place for several years, but a new barbeque joint is catching fire.
You may not see it when you walk in but just follow your nose to WoodBurn Shanks Pit BBQ.
"You know we try everyday to be the best barbeque in the region," said owner Derrick Shanks, "and that's our goal."
At the middle of the mall, halfway between TeleTech and Mylan, across from a thrift store and an art gallery is WoodBurn Shanks Pit BBQ.
"I think it's the best barbeque in Morgantown, that's my personal opinion," Chet Cook who stops in every Tuesday with his wife after yoga class. "It's not fatty, it's lean, it's tasty, the sauce is great."
And it's authentic. Born in Kansas, Shanks brings his flavors from home.
"I brought a lot of recipes with me from the Kansas City," he said. "If I went to a restaurant and liked what I had I would try to replicate it in my kitchen, and pretty soon I had all these entrees and sides."
Before it reaches your plate, the barbecue starts on the wood burning smoker. It's what gives the meat a taste that can only be described.
"There is this deep smoky flavor in it that I've never had before," said regular Miles Gerken. "You get that every single time here. It's really juicy and tender, and easy to cut, kind of addictive."
"Our approach is really simple, we don't cook with any gas. We don't have microwaves or fryers," said Shanks. "This is real barbeque like you would find down south or in Kansas City."
Authenticity is what Shanks hangs his hat on and the product is well received.
From the incredible pork, to the chicken and unique sides it really is hard to go wrong.
"It's probably the best brisket I've ever had. The beans are incredible, the corn is amazing," said Gerken.
"I hope they have a lot of luck here and they will," said Cook. "It seems that people like it. Everyone I talk to likes the food as do we."
