The West Virginia University Police Department has been recognized for it's safety and security programs.

The West Virginia University Police Department ranked in Security Magazine's Top 500 picks in the security industry. The department placed seventeenth out of 24 higher education institutions.

Police Chief Bob Roberts said the department's prevention and education practices put them on the list.

"You know we just received our accreditation last year," said Chief Roberts about the WVU Police Department. "We do a lot of things that other agencies perhaps don't spend the time and energy on. But we think it's important that we provide the best quality service that we can for our campus."

The department also received a certificate of recognition from the U.S. Department of Commerce for its partnership with the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics for the implementation of the StormReady Program which aims to help communities with the safety skills needed before and during severe weather.

"Your commitment to the safety of the students and facilities at WVU is evident from your time and effort spent to become StormReady," said Fred McMullen, the National Weather Service's warning coordination meteorologist in Pittsburgh. "This is a tribute to both you and your staff and will ultimately result in the saving of lives and protection of property."

AAA also recognized the department as the 2013 Gold Award winner for Community Traffic Safety. The award recognizes the department's success and dedication to traffic safety initiatives and its positive impact on citizens.
