The State Fire Marshal released the name of man who died in a house fire in Westover Friday morning. Now the family has to deal with the damage of the house, which was a total loss, as well as mourning their family member.
James William Smith, 25, better known as "Jimmy" died in that fire.
His family said he worked the night shift at Ruby Memorial Hospital and usually didn't get home until around 3 a.m. He was asleep and home alone when the fire started.
His cousin, Shawn Woody, said Jimmy was more like his brother.
"Everyone loved little Jimmy. If you're watching this you know how good of a person he was," said Woody. "He had the biggest heart, he's a good kid. It's a tragedy. Our family has lost so many people. It's hard, for everyone."
Woody said Jimmy loved the Steelers, his 3-year-old son, and singing. He listened to a voicemail Smith left him the night before with a song. Smith sang, "Shawn, you're my favorite cousin like a brother."
Woody said Smith would have turned 26 on November 20. He wanted to do something to help with the funeral costs for his cousin.
"To help Jimmy out, his family out, I set up an account," said Woody. "It's called Jimmy Smith Memorial Fund at Fairmont Federal Credit Union. All donations and proceeds will benefit the family. If you could donate there I would really appreciate it."
As of Monday, the exact cause of Jimmy Smith's death was still undetermined.
