One of Lewis County's newest deputies is already making a name for himself statewide.
Deputy Elijah Carpenter was named Most Outstanding Officer of the most recent class of the State Police Academy.
The award is given by a combination of recommendations from the class and from academy staff.
Carpenter said he was honored to receive the award, and doesn't think he did anything different than the rest of his class.
"I went down there with the attitude that if it's worth doing, it's worth overdoing. That's a motto that I've kept with. I just tried my heart out tried to do everything I could not only for myself, but I guess for other people," Carpenter said.
Lewis County Sheriff Adam Gissy said Carpenter's award shows the quality of officers the sheriff's department hires in the county.
