Patterson, Not Luck, Named Texas Athletic Director

After much speculation regarding the next athletic director of the University of Texas, official news came Tuesday morning that has implications for West Virginia University.

Steve Patterson, currently athletic director at Arizona State University, had been named as DeLoss Dodds' replacement rather than Oliver Luck. WVU's athletic director had been widely reported as the frontrunner for the position and was said to have formally interviewed with UT this week, but on Tuesday morning, those reports changed.

Rather than plucking Luck from Morgantown to take over one of most powerful athletic departments in the nation, Texas tabbed Patterson with an official news release in the early afternoon.

Recent reports indicated that Luck, who received his law degree from Texas, would be named to the position following this weekend's meeting between the Mountaineers and the Longhorns in Morgantown. Luck was present Monday night at WVU's exhibition basketball game.

A former WVU quarterback, Luck began serving as his alma mater's athletic director in 2010 and has been a part of major decisions that have impacted the university ever since. Luck is largely responsible for West Virginia's move to the Big 12 in addition to bringing beer sales to the football and basketball venues and making a number of coaching changes along the way.

Luck was recently named one of 13 members of the first College Football Playoffs Selection Committee.

His experience in professional and college sports along with his business savvy made Luck a strong candidate for the Texas job, but ultimately the Longhorns went in another direction.
