Animal Friends is a well known shelter in North Central West Virginia.
Amanda Forsythe is a volunteer that has fostered more than 15 animals for the organization. But she said her help doesn't just stop there.
"Sometimes I foster animals for them, I'll bottle raise puppies, I'll go in and help them clean, I'll run adoption days at the shelter itself. I pretty much do a little bit of everything," she said.
Animal Friends hosted it's annual Halloween Egg Haunt and Costume Contest at Marilla Park on Sunday.
This is just one of the many events that Animal Friends hosts in order to bring awareness to fosterering of animals. There were many dogs at the event including, 'Spud' and 'Tater'. The two Chihuahua puppies and their father are at the shelter right now and need to be adopted.
"This event is not to raise money but it's to actually raise fun and awareness of the organization," said Forsythe. "So they call it a FUNraiser instead of a FUNDraiser"
"It's just an opportunity for all dog owners to get together and socialize the dogs," said Ronda Smith, the Chair Person of Animal Friends of North Central West Virginia. "It's not necessarily a fundraiser, we do ask for a donation, and all proceeds go to our no kill shelter. But it's just to get out and have some fun and luckily we have a nice."
Dogs were transformed into Gypsies, Star Wars characters, and even the big bad wolf. The dogs all get treats from the eggs and could win prizes for most creative and best costumes.
The shelter hopes that fun events like this will remind people of the work the volunteers do for the animals waiting to find their forever homes.
"Because they're a non-kill. When you come to the sanctuary it's a house environment," said Fosythe. "Even if the dog has aggression, or bites, or anything they don't put the dog down. The dog will stay there forever if it has to and everyone is just very loving and caring towards the dogs. It's like they're their own dogs."
The shelter can hold up to as many as 50 animals at a time. If you're interested in adopting visit the Animal Friends website.
