School bus drivers across the state are observing school bus safety week.
Transportation officials remind drivers to pay closer attention to buses when they see children getting on and off.
Statistics show that last year more than 600 drivers nationwide were guilty of illegal passing.
"When that bus is stopped in the roadway, its for the purpose of letting students on and off the bus and when they see the lights on there's going to be students cross the roadway," said Randy Long, of Randolph County Schools.
School Bus Safety Week promotes awareness through poster and speech contests, and distribution of school bus safety community awareness tool kits.
