Clarksburg City Council met Thursday evening to discuss future improvements to Rail Spur Line Tracks and new lighting to be installed at Jackson Square in downtown Clarksburg.
The city of Clarksburg got a grant for $291,659.74 for the maintenance of Rail of Rail Spur line tracks that served the business and technology center. Council also awarded $29,800 to CJ Products to place lighting at Jackson Square.
"Lights was one of the upgrades that we wanted to do to the facility and so we are going to have permanent lighting attached to that year round. It's not just for Christmas, it's year-round lighting for any event that you would host down there," said Mayor Cathy Goings.
During the city council meeting council member Margaret Bailey called for Councilman Sam Lopez to step down, again.
Lopez is scheduled for trial in January for domestic battery charges involving his wife.
Lopez was prepared for Bailey to call for his resignation and released a written statement. In that statement, Lopez said he has "stood by" other council members in their times of distress, and believes he brings a "positive influence" to council. You can read the letter in its entirety here.
On Oct. 18, Margaret Bailey released a statement following Lopez's. She said she called for his resignation because of his charges "being kept from the voting public" during the election earlier this year and feels that is an "egregious" violation of public trust.
