Athlete Of The Week: Fairmont Senior Forward Gabi Mascaro

The Fairmont Senior girls soccer team  is one of the top teams in the state. Its goals come early and often from a lot of different players. But there is one senior who typically catches the eye of everyone in the crowd. Gabi Mascaro has seen it all on the soccer field, and is the clear cut leader of the Lady Polar Bears.

For most of her final East-West rivalry game, the senior forward rooted from the sideline wearing just one shoe.

"The girls respond to her well, even if she's not on the field they're listening for her voice," said head coach Ryann Moore.

Mascaro plays soccer almost 365 days a year. That workload comes at a cost.

The senior has been nagged all season with plantar fasciitis, but it wouldn't keep her off the pitch that night.

"It's the rivalry so I had to go out there for at least ten minutes. I got a goal and came off."

If you look in the box score you wouldn't know Mascaro has been nursing an injury. The star has led her team to a 14-2-1 record, tallying 22 goals and 14 assists along the way.

"I just want to the do the best I can for the girls, the school, for my school," said Mascaro.

"She's very important to this team," said Moore. "Our seniors lead this team and Gabi is a big part of that."

After recording a goal in her final rivalry game, Mascaro came to the sideline where she spent the night coaching.

"I feel like I have to lead by example because I know a lot of girls look up to me," she said. "A lot of girls do what I do, say what I do. I want to leave them with as much knowledge as I can. I don't want to leave them high and dry because the underclassman have so much talent."

Next year the senior hopes to continue her soccer career, even looking at a division one program. For now, the Polar Bears will covet her and the rest of their seniors as they make another push at the state title.

"Gabi wants to play at the next level and she's pushing herself to get there. Any team would be lucky to have her," said Moore.

Fairmont Senior finishes its regular season on Thursday night at home against Preston.
