The 2013 Community Leadership Academy was held at the Waterfront Place Hotel. WVU Extension Services hosted the second annual event on October 3 and 4.

The conference brings together two tracks, one for community leaders and one for local government leaders. The leaders go to seminars and hear speakers that teach economic development and leadership skills.

County Commissioners, clerks, visitor bureaus, and Economic Develop Authority workers all attended the event.

"We have this conference theme. It's called 'Working Together.' The theme is carried throughout the entire conference," said Kelly Nix, a WVU Extension Service Leadership Specialist and the chair of the event. "So, the collaboration and partnerships across boundaries, across borders, is the message that we're sending in all sessions."

The two day event included break out sessions and keynote speakers on how to improve the community.

"It's lessons learned. We would really like people to take away the knowledge base of how we can develop our communities," said Nix. "In terms of economic development so we can develop our communities to be healthier."

Keynote speakers for the event included Ed Morrison, from Purdue University and Ed Kline from WVU.

The academy continues to grow each year and they hope to host a bigger event next fall.
