Clarksburg Police Officer Mike Daugherty has a full plate when it comes to his job.
He's not only an officer, but he's the Prevention Resource Officer at Robert C. Byrd High School, in charge of all the neighborhood watch programs in Clarksburg, and created an award winning anti-bullying program.
But before he became an officer, he pursued one of his other passions.
"I've had two passions since I was a little kid, I wanted to be a cop and I wanted to be a comedian," said Daugherty.
That's exactly what Officer Daugherty did. He attended the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Clown College and then lived the first of his two dreams.
"I traveled with the Ringling Brothers & Barnum and Bailey Circus for three years. I loved it, there was no greater experience than looking out and seeing 40,000 people out there and making them laugh," Daugherty said.
After the circus, Daugherty was a comedian for Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines.
"I traveled with them for 9 years. I love performing and getting on the stage and being able to bring laughter to everybody. If they could forget about their problems for 45 minutes, and just laugh, it made my day," said Daugherty.
Daugherty became a police officer in 2007, achieving his second dream. He continues to use some of his prior training in his work with the department.
"I learned how to balance a ladder on my chin; I learned how to juggle as a clown. I use all of those in law enforcement so I'm approachable by the kids; you need someone that can relate to that child. So I use these past skills so that I can make a difference as an officer," said Daugherty.
Officer Daugherty said his passion is to help people, and that he wants to make a difference.
He said he loves to have fun, but knows there's a time and place for it.
"I take my job as an officer very serious, but every once in a while, you got to laugh," Daugherty said.
Daugherty owns Mr. Mike's Comedy, and still performs at school assemblies and other events.
