The Clarksburg Police Department said Thursday that a gun was located at Mountaineer Middle School Wednesday.
It said a student brought the gun to the school, and gave it to another student who then turned it over to an adult at the school
The investigation is ongoing and the police department said charges could be filed.
Mountaineer Middle School said four students could face punishment but could not comment on how.
Ken Winkie, Safety and Enforcement Officer for Harrison County Schools, confirmed that a gun was found at Mountaineer Middle School on Wednesday, following conflicting reports from the Board of Education. Winkie said this launched a code red lockdown that was later downgraded to a code yellow and then a code green lockdown.
Winkie said no one was injured.
Defense attorneys were at the school on Wednesday to meet with parents and students, Winkie said.
Winkie said disciplinary action at the school level as already been taken for more than one student. Winkie could not confirm how many students faced disciplinary action.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives was also on scene Wednesday, Winkie confirmed.
Mountaineer Middle School in Clarksburg was in a code red lock down Wednesday afternoon after a student was found to have a knife at the school, said Mike Queen, Harrison County Board of Education President.
Officials said initially it was also believed that another student had a gun. Law enforcement investigated and searched the school, and no gun was found, said Queen.
School officials and officers said the lock down was precautionary.
Clarksburg police said an investigation into the incident is ongoing and charges could be filed.
