On Tuesday, the Upshur County Board of Education met with parents and residents to discuss their ideas about the excess levy.
Board members said that the proposed levy is a renewal of the existing levy, and that there will be no tax increases for residents at this time. The proposed levy is a for a five-year renewal. The levy includes funding things like new textbooks, new technologies for students and many other class room items.
The Upshur County Board of Education recently approved funds for two new scoreboards for Buckhannon Upshur High School, one for football and the other for its soccer field.
The board has approved $124,000 to cover both scoreboards out of school funds, at Tuesday night's BOE meeting, board members said that Athletic Boosters are working hard to pay back those funds by selling advertisements and getting donations from community members.
"I learned that they are trying to get more information out about the levy, but I think at the same time they have things like the score board that comes up in the paper and people think its all about athletics and I don't think that's a good thing," said resident George Sandberg.
The board is holding meetings at all the schools in the county. It tabled a decision to set a date for the excess levy.
