College Spotlight: ABU Football Makes History

Posted: Updated:

Its been a historical year for Alderson Broaddus University who in June officially became a University. The History continued this weekend when the Battlers played varsity football for the first time since 1930.

"Just like I told the players before the game, there were 84-years of alums, or the ghosts of those alums, looking down on us today to make sure we represented our school well, and I know we did," said head coach Denny Creehan.

Saturday history was made in blue and gold fashion. Before a play was even called thousands of fans filled the new Performance Stadium for a ribbon cutting ceremony.

Then the Battlers took the field, found the gas pedal and hung 31 points on Pace University.

"It's a once in a lifetime thing," said ABU quarterback Wilson Vaughn. "We're all excited, we've been excited for two years. It was great to get out here and get that first win and bring it home for ABU."

Saturday's spectacle was far more than just a football game, 2,775 fans came out to Philippi filling every seat and space in between.

"The excitement is so surreal," said student Jordan Oxner. "Everybody came out to support from everywhere in West Virginia. It's not just WVU anymore, it's Alderson Broaddus Battlers as well, so it's pretty exciting and cool."

"First game on the new field, they score the first time they have the ball, chills just go up my back. It's phenomenal," said fan Donald Ford. "I was really looking forward to just being here today."

On a day where ABU lost the turnover battle, had the ball for nearly 14 less minutes, and was out gained on offense they turned to the 12th man, the fans, friends and Alumni who energized the stadium and fueled the Battlers.

"You hear the crowd screaming and you just want to play well for them," said Vaughn. "It was a factor in this game. On fourth down they were screaming and we really loved it. We want them to be out there like that every game"
