It's crazy to think about what the game of football does for a university, a city, and even a state.
Fairmont State University has dedicated its 2013 football season to change. It has a brand new coach. It has joined a brand new conference. Now, it has a brand new look to top it all off.
"Our look on game day, that was a big change in my eyes. I thought it was something that the kids could rally behind and hopefully the community would appreciate it and like it. For the most part, I think we have heard all good things," said Jason Woodman, Fairmont State University Head Football Coach.
When the word 'change' comes to mind, some people find that to be a negative thing.
But for the Falcon Football team, it's positive.
Diehard Falcon fans may remember the team's old uniforms. The new ones are completely different.
"I love it. It's very exciting for everybody. The whole team," said Bryan Wilson, Fairmont State safety. "Just being able to look good, play good. That's what we're trying to do."
The Falcons recently joined the new Mountain East Conference and they wanted to soar in with style.
"Ryan Dumont and I sat down and we probably put 17 hours into designing the uniforms and the helmets. We had our Riddell rep who worked hand in hand with us in this. This has been a three month process of trial and error," Coach Woodman said.
Players said the new look reminds them of the Oregon Ducks. Someone dared to be different and it worked.
"You always look at Oregon on Saturday to see their uniforms. I guess it kind of felt like that coming out Thursday night," Wilson said.
"I wish I would have had their reaction on video the first time they saw the helmets. It was awesome for me just to see them excited about it," Coach Woodman said.
If you haven't seen the Falcon's new uniforms, you can do so on Saturday.
They are home against Shepherd. Kickoff is at 1 p.m.
